With the biggest hit of early 2021, the singer-songwriter was just getting started.
When Olivia Rodrigo scored the first big hit of 2021 with the heartbreak ballad drivers license – which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent eight weeks on top, a nearly unheard-of level of achievement for an official debut single – it seemed fairly likely that it would end up towering over the rest of her breakthrough year.
By the time her rookie season came to a close, however, drivers license was firmly in her rear view. With the scorching post-breakup missive good 4 u, Rodrigo scored a second Hot 100 No. 1 that proved just as culturally pervasive, with a shout-along chorus, searing guitars and pulse-racing drum fills that proved the pop-punk revival percolating just below the mainstream had officially emerged aboveground. And the album both tracks were on, the rapturously received and Billboard 200-topping Sour, became one of the year’s biggest full-length sets, earning an album of the year nod for this year’s Grammy Awards — one of seven awards Rodrigo is up for in April. Merely a year into her solo career, the 19-year-old singer-songwriter isn’t a one- or even a two-hit wonder; she’s simply Olivia Rodrigo.
“When people from all walks of life and all over the world really connect with an album and artist this powerfully, you don’t stand in the way,” says John Janick, chairman/CEO of Interscope Geffen A&M (IGA), whose Geffen label announced Rodrigo’s signing three days before the release of “drivers license” in January 2021. “You do what feels right and what is authentic to the artist and project. You also think long term.”
In the short term, that means preparing for her Sour tour – Rodrigo’s first time hitting the road – which begins in April and will take her across America and Europe through early July. But while Rodrigo’s early blockbuster success would undoubtedly allow her to fill arenas, she’s instead visiting mostly smaller amphitheaters and concert halls. “I think it’s important not to skip steps in my career,” she says of the underplay strategy. “And also, I’m just really excited to play these more intimate venues and get to know my fans on a deeper, more personal level.”
At the same time, Billboard’s Woman of the Year will also get reacquainted with herself, as she lays the groundwork for her next album — and she’ll do it with a significant new addition to her team. Rodrigo recently signed with Aleen Keshishian and Zack Morgenroth of Lighthouse Media + Management, joining a roster that includes Selena Gomez and a slew of A-list actors. (She parted ways with longtime manager Kristen Smith of Camp Far West in January; Rodrigo declined to comment on the change.)
“Olivia is a once-in-a-generation singer-songwriter,” says Keshishian. “We were blown away by her preternatural intelligence, work ethic, sensitivity and vision. It has been so impressive getting to know her and seeing firsthand how grounded and down to earth she is, as well as how much gratitude she has. Not only is she collaborative, but she is respectful and appreciative of her collaborators. For an artist to be able to take suggestions and synthesize them, while still making sure their vision is implemented, is an extremely unique quality and something at which Olivia excels.”
It’ll be a different process this time around for Rodrigo than when she was a high-schooler better known as a Disney TV star than as a singer-songwriter. But she has already reunited with a familiar face in Sour co-writer/producer Dan Nigro, and she says their work on that album’s follow-up is underway — and they even have a title already.

Which Olivia Rodrigo Song Are You Based on Your Zodiac Sign?
In honor of “spicy Pisces” Olivia Rodrigo, we match up her songs to the 12 signs of the zodiac.
It all ends with Pisces. As the last and oldest sign in the zodiac, the water sign is an amalgamation of all the lessons learned before it. To be a Pisces is to be empathic, compassionate, a little bit of a freak, and operating on a completely different frequency. Pisces feels it all, all the time; it’s not easy being the conduit for the universe’s poetry! But on the bright side, this translates into one seriously divine gift: profound and touching songwriting about love, loss, and longing. Nina Simone, Kurt Cobain, Rihanna, and Grimes have long held down the fish representation in music, and in 2021 the floodgates opened and threw a new voice into the mix – Olivia Rodrigo.
The teenage singer-songwriter and self-proclaimed “spicy Pisces” made her impact on music and culture at large not with a trickle, but with a straight up deluge. (In true water sign manner!) Her breakout hit “drivers license,” with its crisp, earnest adolescent longing dominated the charts and became a cross-generational hit. And then came SOUR, Rodrigo’s debut record that catapulted her from a momentary Disney starlet to a global sensation. As a songwriter, Rodrigo’s knack for distilling the emotional highs and lows of crushing hard and getting subsequently dropped on your ass is as Piscean as it gets. And in honor of her water sign impact, find out which Rodrigo song represents your zodiac sign, below.
Olivia Rodrigo Takes Fans Behind the Scenes of ‘SOUR’ in ‘Intimate’ Disney+ Movie
Olivia Rodrigo will flaunt her driver’s license in her upcoming Disney+ movie Driving Home 2 U (A Sour Film) as she takes fans on a road trip from Salt Lake City, where she began writing her debut album, to Los Angeles.
Along the way, Rodrigo will tell the stories behind “Sour, and discuss how it feels to be a woman navigating pop stardom in her teens. Featuring behind-the-scenes footage in and out of the recording studio, the film will debut exclusively on Disney Plus on March 25.
The movie will also feature 11 songs from the triple-platinum album performed with new arrangements in unique locations, from Roy’s Motel & Café to Red Rock Canyon State Park. Special guests Jacob Collier, Blu DeTiger and Towa Bird will also make appearances.
“This is a unique film experience where for the first-time fans will understand how her album came to be and why it was such a personal journey for Olivia,” said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television, in a statement. “This is not a concert film per se, but really, an opportunity to experience first-hand how Olivia Rodrigo became one of the biggest music stars of the day — and a chance to see her perform the songs from ‘Sour’ like never before.”
“‘Driving Home 2 U’ is such a unique and fresh approach to a music film, and that’s just what we’ve come to expect from Olivia,” added John Janick, chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M and Interscope Films. “It’s an authentic look into her creative process, her incredible drive and who she is as an artist and person. We’re so proud to have co-produced this film with Supper Club and are thrilled that it has found a home on Disney Plus.”
Rodrigo, who was recognized as Variety‘s Hitmakers Songwriter of the Year, opened up about her brutally honest songwriting in December.
“I always write songs when I’m in the thick of whatever emotion I’m feeling,” the 18-year-old told Variety. “It’s like my therapy.”
From Disney Branded Television, “Olivia Rodrigo: Driving Home 2 U” is directed by Stacey Lee and produced by Interscope Films and Supper Club.
Olivia Rodrigo Signs With Lighthouse Management
Rumors that 2021 breakout star Olivia Rodrigo is signing with new management are true: The seven-time-Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter-actor has signed with Lighthouse Management + Media’s Aleen Keshishian and Zack Morgenroth for management in all areas, a source close to the situation confirms to Variety.
The move seems to reflect a desire on Rodrigo’s part to be with a company that straddles music and film/TV, and with a roster that includes Jennifer Aniston, Selena Gomez, Jason Bateman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Paul Rudd, artist Petra Collins, and supermodel Miranda Kerr, among others, Lighthouse would seem to fit that bill.
Rodrigo, who was named Songwriter of the Year at Variety‘s Hitmakers event in December, was previously managed by Kristen Smith of Camp Far West. Rumors that she was seeking new management were first reported in Hits last month.
Rodrigo capped her breakthrough year with an impressive seven Grammy nominations related to her debut album “Sour,” including album of the year, song of the year, record of the year and best new artist. While other artists had more nominations — specifically Jon Batiste, Justin Bieber, Doja Cat and H.E.R. — Rodrigo is the only one nominated in each of the “Big Four.”
Ironically, the last artist to achieve that feat also has seven nods this year: Billie Eilish, who swept the Big Four at the 2020 awards with her “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” album and “Bad Guy” single (she and her brother/collaborator Finneas won two others that year as well).
Only 17 at the time, Eilish set the record as the youngest person to receive all four nominations — beating Rodrigo, who is 18.

Olivia Rodrigo Puts a Dazzling Twist on the Slip Dress
This time last year, the Brit Awards marked Olivia Rodrigo’s very first red carpet outing as a newly-minted superstar following the runaway success of her breakout hit “Driver’s License.” For the 2021 ceremony, the musician stepped out in a Dior haute couture gown before changing into a red Valentino dress with batwing sleeves—and finally, bringing the house down with a performance of her record-breaking first single.
So it makes sense that the 18-year-old pop prodigy would make it a priority to return to London for this year’s event, even if this time, she arrived with a year of honing her ever-evolving, playful style under her belt. It’s no secret that Rodrigo knows how to pay perfect homage to the eras that inspire her in both music and fashion—most notably, the late ’90s and early ’00s—and it seems that for her second showing at the Brits, she went for a subtle nod to one of her heroes, Courtney Love, whose love of a silver slip dress is well known. (Who can forget the thrifted silky number Love wore to the 1995 Vanity Fair Oscars party, styled with a tiara?)
Rodrigo’s shimmering Alexandre Vauthier dress, though, offered a very 2022 take on grunge—that is, dialed up the glamour for maximum impact. Embellished with thousands of square sequins, the dazzling fishtail gown came paired with delicate Stefere earrings, Giuseppe Zanotti wedges, and rings by Djula and Poche. And while Rodrigo might not have performed this evening, she still got her on-stage moment after winning the award for best international song. It seems that Rodrigo’s return to London didn’t just deliver in the style stakes, but came with some much-deserved laurels for her music too. To paraphrase the title of one of her best-known tracks: Good for her.

See how the pop princess has grown as an artist over the years before she picks up her prize as Billboard’s Woman of the Year at the 2022 Women in Music Awards.
After a landmark year in which she released her debut album, played her first big concert and broke streaming records, the rise of Olivia Rodrigo has only just begun.

GAYLE Shares the DM She Received From Olivia Rodrigo
The singer-songwriter also opened up about being compared to Rodrigo.
GAYLE has become a teen pop sensation overnight due to the success of her viral hit “abcdefu,” and is now getting praise from her peers. In an interview with E! News published on Thursday (Jan. 20), the 17-year-old explained how surreal the success has been and revealed that 2021’s breakthrough pop star Olivia Rodrigo has not only been in touch with her, but has also been incredibly supportive of her journey.
“Olivia Rodrigo DMed me. That was insane,” GAYLE shared. “She was just congratulating me on the success of the song. She told me that I was killing it and that was very just nice to hear from her, especially because she’s just such an amazing artist and talented human being.”
Though Rodrigo has reached out to GAYLE, this doesn’t mean they’re planning to collaborate on a track — at least not yet. “I would love to collaborate with Olivia. I had an opportunity to ask that but I didn’t because, you know, everybody wants to collaborate with Olivia Rodrigo,” the “Ur Just Horny” singer explained. She added that it would be “amazing, but I’m also not going to be like stalking her for it because she knows what she wants to do.”
With the popularity of both GAYLE’s debut single and Rodrigo’s “Drivers License,” fans of both of the artists sometimes comment on their similarities. For GAYLE, she sees the comparisons as a compliment.
“I’m so grateful and so happy that people could look at my music and even just think it’s maybe possibly the high quality of Olivia’s is. The only problem that I have with comparisons is when they start competing us against each other,” she said. “I truly believe that we both can be great in our own ways, and she’s already great. And I’m just trying to do my thing and not suck, you know?”“Abcdefu” is currently in its second week at No. 1 on both the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts (dated Jan. 22). The track debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 51, but has since climbed to the No. 9 spot on the chart also dated Jan. 22.
Olivia Rodrigo Splits With Manager
Olivia Rodrigo is reportedly seeking a new manager after splitting with Kristen Smith.
According to a report, the 18-year-old star parted ways with Camp Far West Management founder Kristen Smith. Rodrigo’s publicist has not responded to comment about the rumor. Hits Daily Double reports that Rodrigo is in early discussions with a few top-tier managers.
Olivia Rodrigo was the breakout success of 2021, scoring the year’s #2 album with SOUR. She also enjoyed the #2 and #3 songs of 2021 with “drivers license” and “good 4 u.” Only Dua Lipa’s “Levitating” edged out the Disney star from the top spot. Rodrigo has also earned nominations in all four of the top Grammy categories for a total of seven noms in 2021.
Rodrigo says everything about her life changed the week “drivers license” dropped.
“It’s quite strange because my entire life has changed in a week, and also nothing has changed at all,” Rodrigo told Vogue. “Every day I’m in my house, doing my homework, but people who I’ve looked up to since I was ten are reaching out and saying they love my music. It’s a strange sort of paradox.”
Rodrigo says she had no expectations for “drivers license” to chart, or break records.
“I’ve always felt great about it, but I definitely didn’t expect it to chart like it has and break all of these records. It’s surreal,” Rodrigo says in an interview. “It feels like a glitch in the simulation that is life. I see all these numbers and records [being broken], but I’m stuck in my house.
“I haven’t seen anyone or even played a show and I haven’t been able to see my producer, so it feels like it’s happening in an insulated time, which is making it feel even crazier.” When asked who she most wants to work with, Rodrigo says she’d love to collab with Lorde. “I love Lorde. She’s the greatest lyricist of our generation, she’s incredible. I love Gwen Stefani too, I’ve been listening to tons of her stuff.”
